Sonos started rolling out Sonos 27, which brings AI tools and new audio features to its speaker range. It seems to be part of the operating system, but the scope is bigger. The company is gradually launching the new update across iPhone and Android devices, along with the Sonos speakers.
The update adds Model Context Protocol (MCP) support. It lets AI services such as ChatGPT and Claude interact with compatible Sonos products. Users can use AI to play music, pause playback, group speakers, and move audio between rooms. They can also control features such as Night Sound and Speech Enhancement.
Sonos 27 also adds more ways to use its speakers around the home. Portable Sonos speakers can now work as rear speakers with the Arc Ultra soundbar. Sonos Ace Ultra headphones can move audio between the headphones and compatible speakers.
The company is also working on Sonos Voice, a new voice assistant. Custom Agents are planned for 2027 and could let users build their own AI agents with a chosen model and voice.
The update changes how some Sonos products can be used. A portable speaker does not have to stay in one role. For example, two portable Play speakers can work as rear speakers with the Arc Ultra while watching a movie. Sonos’ positioning technology can detect where they are placed and adjust their role. Once they are moved away, they can return to normal portable use.

The bigger idea is flexibility. One speaker can serve different needs at different times. A pair can support a home theater setup at night and work as regular portable speakers later. Moreover, AI adds another simple way to control the system. Instead of opening the app for every task, users can ask ChatGPT or Claude to handle basic commands.
Sonos 27 is not just an AI update. It brings together smarter controls, portable speakers, headphones, and room-based audio. The goal is a system that can change with the way people use their homes.
