A once-niche engineering role popularised by Palantir is rapidly expanding across Silicon Valley as companies look for ways to turn powerful AI models into tools that work inside real businesses.
The job refers to ‘forward-deployed engineers,’ who work with customers to configure AI software and resolve business issues.
According to labor-market figures provided by Lightcast and reported by Fortune, jobs for ‘forward-deployed engineers’jumped by more than 1,000 percent from January to August 2026 compared with the same period the previous year. They also surged by more than 4,600 percent since 2023.
Such growth is significantly larger than that seen in the overall tech employment sector, which experienced only 13 percent year-over-year growth.
Forward deployment of engineers is not new. Palantir has been doing this for years, deploying its engineers to clients’ offices to build and install software. But now the concept seems to be gaining popularity because firms want to fill the gap between sophisticated AI software, their own data, legacy IT equipment, and business processes.
The financial upside is significant. Lightcast figures shared with Fortune put the median advertised salary above USD 188,000 for forward-deployed engineers, compared with roughly USD 145,000 for a traditional software engineering role.

At some companies, including Anthropic, total compensation for these positions can reportedly reach USD 400,000.
Palantir remains the archetype, with roughly four dozen forward-deployed openings listed across assignments involving corporations, defense organizations, and national governments.
The company describes the role as similar to that of a startup CTO. Engineers work in small teams with little oversight and own projects end-to-end, from system architecture to direct discussions with client executives.
Palantir’s market capitalization now tops USD 400 billion, while its most recent quarterly revenue rose 93 percent year over year to USD 1.94 billion.
The approach is spreading. Microsoft, Meta, Google, OpenAI and Anthropic have opened forward-deployed engineering positions, while Nvidia and Scale AI have adopted similar structures for product management and technical architecture roles.
The job requires coding, machine learning, generative AI, and infrastructure skills, as well as communication, consulting, and business judgment.
Candidates also need experience with APIs, data pipelines, cloud infrastructure and deploying reliable AI systems. The key differentiator is no longer simply knowing the latest AI tools, but connecting technical expertise to measurable business outcomes.
