Indian stock markets fell sharply on Wednesday, October 28, as rising oil prices and global tensions worried investors. The BSE Sensex dropped as much as 826 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 lost over 200 points. Heavy selling in IT stocks and concerns about the US Federal Reserve's decision added to the market's losses.

Four main factors are behind the stock market fall: rising crude oil prices, US-Iran tensions, profit booking, and uncertainty about US interest rates. These concerns have made investors cautious about buying shares. Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) were among the biggest contributors to the market decline.

1. Crude Oil Prices Rise Above USD 115

Brent crude oil prices climbed above USD 115 per barrel as fears of supply problems in the Middle East increased. Reports of possible military action against Iran added to concerns about global oil supplies. Higher oil prices are a major concern for India, which imports most of its oil.

Expensive oil can increase India's import costs and put pressure on the rupee. It can also make transport and production more expensive for businesses. These higher costs may reduce company profits and increase inflation, making investors more careful.

2. US-Iran Tensions Worry Investors

Uncertainty over the conflict involving the US and Iran has made global investors nervous. Many investors are avoiding risky investments while waiting for clearer signs about the situation. Concerns about the Strait of Hormuz have also raised fears of oil supply disruptions.

If tensions increase further, oil prices could remain high for longer. This could put more pressure on India's economy, businesses, and stock market.

3. IT Stocks Fall as Investors Book Profits

IT stocks faced heavy selling and led the market decline on Wednesday. Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and TCS were among the major stocks pulling down the benchmark indices. Concerns about artificial intelligence and its possible impact on the technology industry also affected investor confidence.

Some traders also sold shares to secure profits after Tuesday's derivatives expiry. This reduced buying activity and added to the market's weakness.

4. Investors Wait for the US Federal Reserve

Investors are waiting for the US Federal Reserve's latest decision on interest rates. Markets expect the Fed to keep rates between 3.75% and 4%, but its plans remain uncertain.

If the Fed signals that interest rates will stay high, the US dollar could strengthen. Investors may then prefer US bonds over shares in emerging markets such as India. This could reduce foreign investment in Indian stocks and add pressure to Sensex and Nifty.
