Samsung is reportedly planning to bring back the under-display selfie camera with its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 9. The move would mark a change in direction after the company replaced the technology with a conventional hole-punch camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in 2025.
According to tipster kro (@kro_roe) on X, the Galaxy Z Fold 9 could feature a camera placed beneath its foldable display. The leak also points to major internal changes, although the phone's overall thickness and design may stay close to those of the expected Galaxy Z Fold 8. Samsung has not officially confirmed these details.
Samsung first added an under-display selfie camera to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in August 2021. The phone came with a 4-megapixel camera placed beneath its 7.6-inch inner screen. Samsung continued with the same camera technology in the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 6. However, the company decided to change this design with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in 2025.
Samsung removed the hidden camera and introduced a 10-megapixel selfie camera inside a small hole in the display. The company reportedly made this change after facing concerns about the picture quality of under-display cameras. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra have also continued to use the same 10-megapixel hole-punch camera, according to the report.
The latest leak suggests Samsung is considering improvements to the Fold 9's internal hardware. Its external design may see fewer changes, with the company reportedly retaining a similar thickness and overall appearance to the Fold 8.
The tipster had earlier suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 would have dimensions closer to Apple's iPhone Duo. The reported design direction could bring Samsung's foldable phones closer to Apple's upcoming foldable device. However, the camera change and hardware upgrades are still based on leaks. Samsung has yet to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 9 or confirm its specifications.
