WhatsApp is adding a new AI-powered feature, known as Quick Recap, to improve its messaging capabilities. This tool will allow users to create a brief overview of unread messages in up to five conversations. The feature is designed to simplify handling multiple chats without requiring time-consuming scrolling through lengthy message threads.
Currently, WhatsApp allows message summaries for individual chats only. Quick Recap expands this by offering a broader overview across several selected chats. According to reports from WABetaInfo, the feature will be available in WhatsApp for Android version 2.25.21.12, although it remains under development and is not yet accessible to users.
Quick Recap will allow users to select up to five chats from the main screen. After selection, tapping the three-dot menu and choosing "Quick Recap" will generate AI-based summaries of unread messages. These summaries provide a concise yet practical overview of recent conversations. They help the user update on the run by allowing them to update all chats without opening each chat individually.
These functionality enhancements to WhatsApp's current Message Summaries provide summaries of only a single conversation. Quick Recap solves the problem of effectively tracking many conversations by allowing multi-chat summarisation. The technique is self-explanatory and straightforward to navigate within the Chats tab interface.
WhatsApp will introduce Quick Recap based on Private Processing technology in Meta. This technology guarantees the safety and confidentiality of all message data and creates summaries for third parties, including WhatsApp and Meta itself. The summaries are operated within a privacy-preserving enclave and are end-to-end encrypted to protect the user's confidentiality.
Users will find Quick Recap disabled by default, but they can enable it as an optional feature in App Settings. Notably, conversations under WhatsApp's Advanced Chat Privacy feature are not summarized by Quick Recap. This exclusion reflects the design choices of users who prefer not to have an AI-driven experience or enhanced privacy control.
WhatsApp is still working on enhancing messaging effectiveness while maintaining high levels of privacy. The Quick Recap feature reflects this balance by combining AI convenience with the security of managing messages and channeling multiple conversations effectively.
