AI's Role in India's Future Discussed at Paris AI Action Summit: Sundar Pichai the CEO of Google meets Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Paris during the AI Action Summit, where both leaders were quoted discussing the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) to India's digital future. Their conversation focused on AI's potential to drive innovation, growth, and inclusive development for strengthening India’s technological landscape.
Pichai shared details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), saying, "Delighted to meet PM @narendramodi today while in Paris for the AI Action Summit. We discussed the incredible opportunities AI will bring to India and how we could work very closely together on India's digital transformation."
The AI Action Summit served as a platform to address AI’s ethical, economic, and societal implications, fostering international collaboration on responsible AI development. PM Modi, who co-chaired the summit with French President Emmanuel Macron, emphasized the need for global AI governance rooted in transparency and fairness. He advocated for the use of bias-free datasets to ensure accurate AI results, reinforcing India’s commitment to responsible AI implementation.
In his speech at the summit, PM Modi noted that AI is advancing rapidly and is linked with the rest of the world. "AI is developing at an unprecedented scale and speed. There is a deep interdependence across borders. Collective global efforts are essential to establish governance and standards that uphold shared values, address risks, and build trust," he stated.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India's strides in AI adoption and digital infrastructure progress. "India has successfully deployed a digital public infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people at minimal costs. It is meant for modernizing the economy, transforming governance, and changing lives through an open and inclusive framework," he said.
Pichai echoed similar sentiments at the summit, calling AI the "most profound shift of our lifetimes." He noted that AI has the potential to democratize information access on an even greater scale than the internet, leading to a new wave of technological advances.
Besides the summit, PM Modi addressed the India-France CEOs Forum, wherein he encouraged French businesses to invest in India's world-class growing digital and technology ecosystem. "This is a convention more than just a business event—this is going to be the meeting point of the brightest minds from India and France, which is going to drive innovation, collaboration, and progress," he said.
PM Modi also emphasized India and France’s shared trust and democratic values, highlighting their joint efforts in solving global challenges through technology and innovation. "India and France are connected not just by democracy but by deep trust, innovation, and a shared commitment to serving people," he added.
This meeting marked yet another significant interaction between the two leaders after Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, met PM Modi in New York during the Quad Leaders' Summit in September 2024. This discussion in Paris re-emphasized for leveraging AI and digital technologies toward India's socioeconomic transformation.
