Shares of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) hit the market on Thursday, September 24th, 2026, and wasted no time making an impact. Within hours of listing, the exchange became one of India's ten most valuable listed companies.
The stock opened at Rs. 1,800 on the BSE, above its IPO price of Rs. 1,785. It kept climbing through the day, touching a high of Rs.1,878. That's a gain of over 4% from the listing price and more than 5% above what investors paid in the IPO.
By the time trading picked up pace, NSE's market value had crossed Rs. 4.63 lakh crore. That number alone pushed it past some well-known names. Hindustan Unilever, valued at close to Rs. 4.53 lakh crore, fell behind. So did Sun Pharmaceutical Industries at around Rs. 4.48 lakh crore and Titan at about Rs. 4.43 lakh crore.
Even so, NSE still has a long way to go before catching the biggest players. Reliance Industries sits comfortably at the top, worth close to Rs. 16.77 lakh crore. HDFC Bank follows at roughly Rs. 11.25 lakh crore. Companies like Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, TCS, Bajaj Finance, and Larsen & Toubro also rank above NSE for now.

This listing didn't happen overnight. NSE is India's largest stock exchange by turnover, covering both cash and derivatives trading, and its path to going public took years of planning and regulatory back-and-forth.
The IPO itself was large, raising more than Rs. 22,500 crore. It was structured as an offer for sale, meaning existing shareholders sold their stakes rather than the company issuing new shares. Investors showed strong interest before the listing, with the offer getting subscribed nearly six times over.
NSE's spot in the top 10 isn't guaranteed to last. Stock prices move daily, and rankings based on market value can shift just as fast. Still, for a company that took years to reach the public markets, a strong debut is a solid start. How it holds up from here will depend on how investors view its business in the months ahead.
