Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has rolled out Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) services in all telecom circles across India. This is an important milestone in BSNL’s upgrade initiatives for voice connectivity. The launch of these services nationwide was announced through BSNL’s social media platform.
VoWiFi enables customers to make and receive voice calls and send messages through a Wi-Fi network rather than a mobile network. This is a great option for areas with poor or no mobile network coverage.
According to BSNL, this new service will greatly benefit rural and remote areas, where mobile networks are scarce. Voice calls in these areas frequently drop and are not clear. Once VoWiFi services are enabled, users can access Wi-Fi services and ensure their voice calls are uninterrupted.
The service will also make it easier for people to connect indoors, as users will be able to make calls from basements or closed areas, where the signal is weak. In this case, calls will go through BSNL Bharat Fibre or Wi-Fi network.
VoWi-Fi service provides seamless handover functionality from mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity services. This means that a call would continue uninterrupted as one moves from one area to another.
With this, BSNL finally enters the market, competing with private telecommunications companies such as Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, which have been delivering VoWi-Fi services to their customers. This allows companies to compete on a level playing field.

The BSNL VoWiFi service is simple to use compared to other services. Users don’t have to download additional apps, and can use the phone dialer to make or receive calls without any additional costs.
The service also helps mitigate network congestion by offloading voice traffic from mobile operators.
Activation is relatively straightforward, as it requires BSNL customers to toggle the Wi-Fi Calling option to ‘ON’ in their mobile phone settings. People who want to check the compatibility of their mobile phone can refer to the nearest BSNL customer service center or dial the customer care number, which is 1800-1503.
