Microsoft has entered the handheld gaming market by launching the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. These branded gaming PCs were revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase in partnership with Asus. The new devices combine classic Xbox features with powerful specs to offer a portable gaming experience.
The ROG Xbox Ally runs on an AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor. It uses the more powerful AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chipset. Both handhelds operate on a custom version of Windows 11 that boosts game performance by reducing background activity.
Both models include a 7-inch full HD LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. FreeSync Premium is included to prevent screen tearing. The displays are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and feature an anti-reflective DXC coating.
The handhelds use a redesigned grip inspired by the Xbox Wireless Controller. This design makes the devices comfortable for a wider range of hand sizes.
The Ally includes hall effect triggers. The Ally X features upgraded impulse triggers for enhanced tactile feedback. Both versions have a dedicated Xbox button that opens an improved Game Bar overlay.
The Game Bar connects to Asus Armoury Crate. Players can customize input settings, check performance, and launch games. The system supports libraries from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other platforms.
Microsoft has added an AI-powered Gaming Copilot. It helps players launch games, improve gameplay, and connect with other users. The Copilot is part of the new Game Bar experience.
The ROG Xbox Ally has 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. The Ally X increases this to 24GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Battery capacity also differs. The Ally includes a 60Wh battery, while the Ally X uses an 80Wh battery. Both models support fast charging through a 67W charging stand.
Microsoft plans to release the devices during the holiday season of 2025. The launch will cover 24 global markets, including the US, UK, France, Japan, Singapore, and Australia. Other regions, such as India, may receive the devices later.
More details about pricing, pre-orders, and accessories will be announced soon.
Roblox is fully optimized for both handhelds. Microsoft has started a developer program to promote handheld-friendly game design. The program will highlight titles that perform best on portable devices.
Microsoft’s new handhelds aim to bring high-performance gaming on the go. The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X combine Xbox features, AMD power, and smart Windows tools. These devices cater to a diverse range of gamers, from casual players to performance-focused users.
