Meta is all set to bring a new pair of smart glasses that will remove one of the most prominent features of its current AI eyewear: the camera. Internally known as Luna, the glasses could launch this fall, according to The Information. Reuters reported the development but said it could not independently verify the report.
This comes as camera-equipped smart glasses face greater scrutiny over privacy and recording. Meta’s existing AI glasses use cameras for photos, videos and certain AI functions, with a capture LED designed to signal when content is being recorded.
According to The Information, “Luna will feature six built-in microphones. Users would reportedly be able to communicate with Meta AI and the company’s recently introduced consumer AI agent, Muse, through voice commands.”
The glasses are also expected to include speakers similar to those found on Meta’s existing smart glasses. A side-mounted button could provide quick access to Meta AI, giving users a physical alternative to voice activation.Luna plans to eliminate the camera to reduce concerns around people being recorded without their knowledge. It will also allow Meta to retain several AI and audio features.
Meta could unveil Luna at its Meta Connect developer conference, scheduled for September 23 and 24, according to the report. Shipments are reportedly targeted for October. Meta has not publicly confirmed the product, launch timing or specifications.
If launched, Luna would add another direction to Meta’s growing wearable strategy. The company is simultaneously developing more advanced augmented-reality hardware, showing that it sees glasses as an important platform for its AI ambitions.
