Amazon's first colour e-reader, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, has faced criticism as users complain of a yellowish discoloured strip at the bottom of the display.
The device is priced at US$280 (approximately ₹23,500) and has started shipping recently. Many new owners have expressed disappointment. Such complaints have even led to an average star rating of 2.6 on Amazon.
Affected customers have flooded sites like Reddit. Users have posted pictures and accounts that demonstrate how the yellow band becomes very vivid when the screen is set to show even lighting and colours.
Some customers decided to replace their devices while others returned them entirely. The problem appears to be much more significant with the light on the edge of the device, according to the reports of several customers.
The cause behind discoloration may well be the result of an equipment or software malfunction. It is also speculated that the issue may perhaps have cropped up after its initial round of software upgrading.
Amazon said in a statement, "We are aware of some reports from customers who may see a yellow band on the bottom of the display. We take concerns about the quality of our products seriously and are investigating. If you have this concern on your device, please contact our customer service team."
The problem's severity is not clearly defined as opinions vary from user to user. Some users on Amazon claim that the yellow bar is almost insignificant, while others say that it is very distracting.
In the review of The Verge, Andrew Liszewski said that the discoloration is more noticeable on images rather than actual usage, so it may not be such a big issue for everyone.
Such complaints may influence current and successive sales. The buyer may have to re-consider while purchasing Amazon’s Colorsoft.
