Reliance Jio has launched JioPC in India. It is a cloud-based virtual desktop platform that turns regular televisions into personal computers using a set-top box and an internet connection. Currently in its free trial phase, the service is being rolled out via waitlist invitations.
JioPC allows users to connect a keyboard and mouse to their television to access a virtual desktop environment. The system comes preloaded with LibreOffice and Microsoft Office tools that can be accessed through the browser. However, the current version does not support external devices like cameras and printers.
The Jio set-top box needed to make the service work is priced at ₹5,499. It is also available as part of Jio’s home broadband bundles.
Industry experts view JioPC as a potential game-changer in digital access. It will be especially useful in households that own TVs but lack personal computers.
Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, noted that while 70% of Indian homes own a TV, only 15% have PCs. Thus, creating a massive opportunity for JioPC.
Prabhu Ram from CyberMedia Research highlighted that the product could benefit rural and lower-income users. Although it will only be possible if issues such as internet reliability and digital literacy are addressed.
The launch also coincides with a shift in media consumption. India’s active DTH subscriber count has declined by 8% year-over-year, while internet-based viewing has surged. With over 57 million pay-TV set-top box users, JioPC could use this shift to capture a new market.
The biggest challenge for Reliance Jio would be to clearly explain how this Jio Cloud PC works to a varied demographic. The success of the service will also depend on broad app ecosystem support and reliable internet infrastructure.
Enterprise-focused virtual desktops have existed for years. However, JioPC marks one of the first mass-market consumer offerings in this space. Thus, it has the potential to redefine how India accesses computing.
