Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models are rumored to include a more expensive camera system. Reports from the supply chain suggest that the increase in cost is allegedly linked to a variable aperture camera. It is a feature that could make its way to the iPhone for the first time.
The current iPhones use fixed-aperture lenses. A variable aperture system can adjust the amount of light entering the camera, allowing it to adapt to different shooting conditions.
Variable aperture is currently present on several flagships by Google but has yet to be seen in any of Apple products.
With such technology, photography in poorly lit areas will benefit greatly. It will allow users to edit background blurs while capturing portraits.
It can also help in handling bright environments by reducing the amount of light that reaches the sensor. Some reports point out that Apple will implement this feature on its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series instead of the standard models.
The higher cost comes from the hardware’s added complexity. Unlike a fixed lens, a variable aperture camera requires moving mechanical parts and more precise manufacturing.
Those additions reportedly push the cost of the camera module up by approximately 50% compared to the components used in current Pro models.
Camera hardware has become one of the most expensive parts of a flagship smartphone as manufacturers invest in larger sensors, better zoom systems, and new imaging technologies.

A better camera system might not be the only big improvement that Apple plans to make to the iPhone 18 Pro. There are rumors of the A20 Pro chip, which might utilize the 2-nanometer manufacturing process by TSMC. Improvements in telephoto photography and the front camera are also mentioned.
At this point, nothing is known about the potential prices of the upcoming iPhones. They are still more than a year away from being released. However, given the number of changes, manufacturing costs will probably increase.
Whether the company covers these costs or shifts some of them to its customers is unknown. It should be noted that the iPhone 18 Pro will be released in September 2026.
