The latest Instagram updates include extended Reels, a revamped profile grid, and the introduction of a new video editing app called 'Edits.' These updates are said to present more flexibility, creativity, and engagement on the platform.

Duration Extended for Instagram Reels

In reacting to parts of user feedback, the app has boosted the length limitation of Reels from 90 seconds to three minutes. According to the Instagram head Adam Mosseri, this would satisfy the ones who claimed the Instagram Reels are too brief. He further emphasized that the move will help users who need space for sharing relatively long and content-rich posts. Before this update, users could post longer videos only as regular posts instead of Reels.

Redesigned Profile Grid

Instagram also redesigned the profile grid, now featuring content in a vertically aligned format instead of the square grid that it traditionally featured. According to Mosseri, the old square grid did not suit the usual vertical orientation of most Instagram posts, cropping images and videos very aggressively. Now, users will see more of their photos and videos as originally intended. This update is expected to improve how content appears on profiles in the long run.

New Instagram Reels Section: Videos Liked by Friends

The platform has now also included another feature inside Reels. Friends will now have the opportunity to see the likes of the Reels in their feed. Thus, adding a more social experience for them.

According to Mosseri, users could now be directly interacting with their friends over Reels they have liked or engaged in. The functionality will initially appear in select countries and will roll in other regions shortly.

Instagram's New Video Editing App: 'Edits'

Instagram has announced a new video editing app called 'Edits.' As per Mosseri, the app will give a ‘full suite of creative tools,’ including inspiration tracking, support for high-quality video, and the ability to share drafts with others to collaborate. The app will also tell users how videos are performing on Instagram. Although 'Edits' is not yet available for Android, one can pre-register it on the Apple App Store. It is expected to be released on March 13, 2025.
