Instagram has launched a desktop version of its video editing app, Edits. The move puts it in more direct competition with CapCut, which is owned by ByteDance. Creators can now make and edit short videos on a computer, not just on a phone.
The Mac version is built for bigger projects. It has a multi-track timeline, keyframe controls for transitions, and audio waveforms that help line up cuts with sound. Creators can also add their own font files.
The app comes with licensed and free music, sound effects, and video effects. It can add captions in many languages on its own. Audio and text styles saved on the phone app sync to the desktop app. Users can set their own keyboard shortcuts or bring them over from other editing tools.
Instagram says the larger screen makes it easier to handle many clips at once. Small phone screens can make that hard.

Creators can now post finished videos to Instagram straight from the desktop app. They can add a location and tag other users while posting.
Before this, many creators had to export a video, move it to their phone, and make more changes before sharing. Edits cuts out those steps.
The app works with both wide and vertical video. Users can export in 4K with no watermark. That means they can also use the videos on other platforms or for personal projects.
Instagram plans to send out updates every week. It is also working on a way to edit the same project on both desktop and phone. The mobile app will keep getting new features too. More than 50 million creators already use it.
The launch shows that Meta wants to improve its tools for creators. With stronger editing controls, direct posting, and cross-device editing on the way, Instagram wants creators to do more of their video work inside its own system.
