Infosys is planning a workforce restructuring as artificial intelligence changes the nature of work across the information technology sector. The Bengaluru-based IT services company plans to move between a quarter and a third of its 320,000 employees into specialist roles, according to people who attended a recent company event where it discussed the plans.
As part of the workforce transformation, Infosys also plans to build a team of around 6,000 frontier engineers. The group is expected to focus on advanced technologies and help the company respond to changing requirements as AI becomes increasingly important across the IT industry.
The company is also hiring from leading Indian institutes and US campuses. According to people familiar with the discussions, Infosys is competing with AI labs for some of the same talent as it looks to strengthen its capabilities in emerging technologies.
The workforce changes come as Infosys looks to combine broad AI adoption with deeper engineering capabilities and domain expertise. The company has outlined a strategy to augment employees’ capabilities with AI while developing the specialist skills needed for AI-first services.
Infosys has also expanded internal training programs to develop AI talent. Its workforce strategy includes external hiring, recruitment from institutions such as IITs and NITs, and hands-on training through internal bridge programs.

Infosys’ latest annual report says the nature of work is changing, with greater emphasis shifting from code creation to orchestration, system supervision, domain interpretation, and outcome validation. The company says this shift requires new roles, large-scale reskilling and changes to workforce composition.
The planned move of up to one-third of its workforce into specialist positions reflects broader changes in the IT services industry, where companies are increasingly focusing on AI skills and specialized engineering capabilities.
