Rockstar Games is making a welcome change to one of the most familiar controls in the Grand Theft Auto series. Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly allow players to sprint by clicking the left analog stick instead of repeatedly pressing the X button on PlayStation controllers or A button on Xbox controllers.
The change was revealed following a preview session attended by content creators, including YouTuber MikeShowSha. The updated control scheme marks a departure from a mechanic Rockstar has retained across several major releases, including GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
For players who have spent years repeatedly tapping a button to make their characters run, the change could make everyday movement considerably easier.
In earlier GTA titles, players had to repeatedly press the designated face button to maintain a character's running speed. The mechanic often required constant button input during long journeys, missions, and police chases.
With GTA 6, Rockstar is reportedly moving sprinting to the L3 control, activated by pressing the left analog stick. This brings the game closer to the control layouts commonly used in modern action and open-world games. The change also allows players to keep their right thumb on the camera stick while running, making it easier to adjust the camera during movement.

The updated sprint mechanic may seem like a small adjustment, but it could make longer gaming sessions more comfortable. Repeated button pressing has been a familiar criticism of Rockstar's control systems, particularly among players who prefer smoother character movement.
However, the change has divided fans. Some welcome the updated layout, while others prefer the traditional tapping mechanic because it gives movement a more deliberate feel. Rockstar has not confirmed whether players will be able to restore the classic sprint controls through custom settings.

The sprinting update is part of Rockstar's broader effort to refine gameplay in its upcoming open-world title. GTA 6 will feature Jason and Lucia as its central characters and take players through the fictional state of Leonida.
The game is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. More details about its complete control system and gameplay options are expected as the release approaches.
