Google is offering college students free access to select AI plans for one year, along with new Gemini tools designed to help with studying, coursework, and research.

The student offers became available on August 19, as colleges begin a new academic session. Students in the United States can claim Google AI Pro at no cost for 12 months, while students in India and more than 140 other countries can get Google AI Plus free for a year.

AI Plans and Student Benefits

Eligible college students in the US can receive Google AI Pro for one year at no cost. The plan normally costs $19.99 a month and offers higher Gemini usage limits, access to Gemini Spark, Gemini features in Gmail and Google Docs, and 5 TB of storage.

Students in India and other eligible countries outside the US can claim Google AI Plus free for 12 months. The plan provides access to Gemini Omni, higher usage limits, and additional storage.

Google is also offering eligible students discounts of up to 70 percent on selected Google AI Pro plans and YouTube Premium subscriptions.

Dedicated Gemini Space for Students

Google has introduced a dedicated space for students within the Gemini app. It brings study-focused tools and student offers together in one place.

Students can use the hub to create study notebooks, make flashcards, generate practice quizzes and access other learning features. Google said future student-focused additions to Gemini will also be made available through this section.

Study Notebooks and Personalized Learning

Google introduced study notebooks in June to help students work directly with their own course material.

Students can upload lecture notes and other class material, allowing Gemini to create a study plan based on the content. It can also generate diagnostic quizzes to identify areas requiring more attention, followed by lessons and quizzes tailored to those gaps.

A progress dashboard allows students to track their learning. Google plans to add graphs and images to lessons in the coming weeks. It is also developing a feature to identify exam dates and assignment deadlines in a syllabus and add them to Google Calendar, subject to user permission.

Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro subscribers will be able to create more notebooks and use more source material.

Interactive Visuals and Research Tools

Gemini can also generate interactive visualizations for students who learn better through diagrams, models, and hands-on exploration. Depending on the query, it can create 3D simulations, tables, grids and other interactive elements.

Google is also adding Deep Research capabilities to Gemini Live. Students can ask Gemini to handle a multi-step research task while continuing with other work. Once the report is ready, they can discuss the findings, ask follow-up questions, and refine the research through conversation.
