Google Chrome users are required to act fast as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) of the US has put 17 April 2025 as the deadline for updating browsers or stopping to use them completely. The urgent warning was issued after experts discovered a serious security flaw, which is already being used by hackers to penetrate computers via cleverly disguised emails.
The record made available by Google's stable channel update, an emergency fix is being rushed for Chrome on Windows for a critical security hole identified as CVE-2025-2783. Attackers can bypass these Chrome protection barriers on Windows computers. The safe versions 134.0.6998.177/.178 are becoming available to users now.
Chrome isn't the only one affected. Other browsers using the same technology, Microsoft Edge, Opera, etc, are also likely to be affected. With the growth of online threats, browser safety becomes more critical for people whose lives depend on the internet.
The title of this ongoing attack campaign comes from the security firm Kaspersky, who discovered and named it: "Operation ForumTroll." The attack starts with fake emails inviting people to an international forum called Primakov Readings. If users clicked links from mails, their computers automatically would become infected without showing any warning signs. Kaspersky provided detailed analysis of ForumTroll on their official blog.
The attack specifically targets Russian media personnel as well as university employees and government staff. Security experts assumed that there was a Hackers group backed by a Government that mostly steals sensitive information from the victims.
While CISA officially restricted its notice to government employees, it also highly recommends other organizations comply with its advice. India's cyber agency CERT-In has classified this issue "Critical" and has also requested all chrome users around the world to upgrade their browsers immediately.
Mozilla has found a similar one in their Firefox browser, so this security problem may go beyond just Chrome-based browsers.
Chrome users should ensure that they are running version 134.0.6998.177/.178 or higher. If the upgrades cannot be completed by April 17. CISA recommends switching to a different browser for the time until updates can be installed.
