Apple has spent years watching rivals rush into the foldable phone market while it quietly worked through the hard problems. This approach may be about to pay off. Recent reports point to meaningful progress on two of the trickiest challenges in foldable design: display durability and the visible crease that has drawn criticism on competing devices. If the timeline holds, Apple's first foldable iPhone could reach consumers within months.

Apple Appears Closer Than Ever to a Foldable iPhone

The latest reports point to a possible reveal in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 lineup. The device is expected to open like a book, giving users a larger screen when unfolded and a regular phone experience when closed.

One area Apple reportedly spent years working on was the display crease. The company wanted the screen to look smooth and natural. It is also believed to improve the hinge and make the device thinner and easier to carry.

The Supply Chain has reported that the iPhone Fold, likely to be named ‘iPhone Ultra,’ will enter mass production between June and August 2026. However, a roughly one- to two-month delay is possible. The expected price of the foldable model is around $2,000.

These details may not sound dramatic, but they matter. Foldable phones have often faced questions about durability. Apple seems determined to avoid those concerns before putting its name on the product.

Apple is Following Its Own Playbook

Samsung made foldable phones popular and has released several generations of them. Apple, meanwhile, chose not to join the race early. This decision fits the company's history. Apple rarely focuses on being first. Instead, it usually waits until the technology develops and a product feels ready for everyday use.

The foldable iPhone appears to be another example of that approach. Rather than rushing a launch, Apple seems focused on getting the experience right.

A Small Change that Could Lead to Bigger Things

The foldable iPhone may be only the beginning. The technology could eventually influence future iPads and other Apple devices. As screens become more flexible, companies have more freedom to rethink how devices are designed.

For now, the foldable iPhone remains unofficial as the iPhone maker is still silent about its existence. However, after years of rumors, it finally feels closer to becoming a real product rather than just another industry prediction.
