Elon Musk opted for an unusual temporary home in Memphis as he oversees xAI’s expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure. The billionaire says he is currently living in an Airstream trailer close to the company’s massive computing operations.
Musk revealed the arrangement during an appearance on the All-In podcast with SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell. He marks the trailer as his ‘palace' while speaking from Memphis.
The Tesla and SpaceX chief is staying near xAI’s Colossus supercomputer facility as the company works to expand its computing capacity. Musk did not disclose the exact Airstream model he is using.
The compact trailers can include sleeping quarters, a kitchen, and a bathroom. Musk highlighted a basic base near the project rather than requiring him to commute from a conventional residence.
According to reports, “Musk has been staying in the trailer for more than 10 days. His comments suggest the arrangement is closely linked to his involvement in the Memphis expansion rather than a permanent change in residence.”
The trailer puts Musk close to xAI’s Colossus computing operation, which supports the company’s Grok AI models. xAI began building the original Colossus facility in 2024 and aims to further expand in Memphis.
During the podcast, Shotwell said Musk has been helping with construction work in Memphis and described his tendency to stay close to major projects. Musk also said he needed to be in Memphis to work on additional GPUs online.
