Elon Musk appears to have tightened usage limits for Grok Bot after acknowledging that the artificial intelligence agent has become too expensive to operate compared with the revenue it generates. The comments follow complaints from subscribers who said they were exhausting their weekly usage allowances much sooner than expected.

Musk addressed the issue in a November 1 post on X, responding to a user who asked whether Grok Bot's weekly usage limits could be reset. He said the cost of serving the AI agent was "unsustainably high relative to revenue."

Grok Bot Users Report Earlier Usage Limits

Several subscribers recently reported reaching their weekly usage caps days before the scheduled reset. Some users said their allowances were being consumed faster than usual, raising questions about whether xAI had changed its usage policies.

Musk's response appeared to acknowledge the financial pressure behind the restrictions. However, he did not explain exactly what had changed or confirm whether the company had formally reduced usage allowances.

Running AI Agents Comes With Higher Costs

Unlike conventional chatbots, Grok Bot can perform tasks independently using its own virtual computer. It can handle activities such as research, web browsing and other multi-step assignments without requiring users to guide every action.

These capabilities require considerable computing resources, making the service more expensive to operate than a standard conversational AI tool.

Grok Bot was introduced in August and has expanded quickly. SpaceX reportedly said during its October earnings call that the service had reached approximately 800,000 paid weekly users.

Subscription Changes Remain Unclear

Grok Bot is available through paid subscription plans, with different usage allowances depending on the tier. Musk's comments have raised questions about whether xAI will introduce stricter limits, revise subscription pricing or offer additional usage through higher-priced plans.

For now, the company has not announced a specific pricing revision or confirmed a permanent change to its weekly allowances.
