Elon Musk’s The Boring Company proposed a high-speed tunnel between Austin and San Antonio in Texas. This announcement came as a reply to a post on X that had an AI-made video of a common science-fiction concept of human colonies on other worlds. Musk reposted the video and mentioned in the comment section, “Boring Company is working on a simple, precursor Hyperloop tunnel between Austin and San Antonio.”
Further, the billionaire stated that the route could cut the journey to less than 30 minutes, with speeds above 200 mph. He also called the idea a simple step toward the Hyperloop concept. The plan is still at an early stage, with no final route, cost, funding plan, or launch date announced.
However, since it surfaced, the idea raised questions. The Boring Company’s past plans were mostly unsuccessful. For example, the company proposed tunnels between Chicago and Los Angeles and between New York City and Washington, D.C., but neither moved ahead. Critics also questioned whether an 80-mile tunnel can be built at a reasonable cost and within a practical time frame.
The route could also face competition from other transport plans. A passenger rail project is already being discussed between Austin and San Antonio. This makes the choice between rail, roads, and underground travel an important part of the debate.

Underground travel could ease pressure on busy roads and use less surface space. A fast point-to-point system could also offer a new option for people traveling between nearby cities. Still, speed is only one part of the picture. Cost, safety, capacity and access would all shape whether people actually use such a system.
Musk’s latest tunnel idea puts underground travel back in focus. The bigger test will be turning the pitch into a detailed plan with funding, approvals, and a workable route.
