Donald Trump’s AI Safety Pact is Voluntary: What Can It Actually Change?

Donald Trump has backed a voluntary AI safety pact signed by major tech leaders. But the bigger talking point may be the US move to use ‘super intelligence’ instead of ‘artificial intelligence’.

US President Donald Trump has brought several major AI leaders together for a new safety pact. However, the agreement is voluntary and does not require everyone to follow. The document named, White House Accord on Super Intelligence: A Joint Commitment on Frontier, asks companies to follow certain safety steps, but they are not legally required to do so. Trump has described the pact as ‘morally binding’. The meeting had the presence of renowned tech leaders like Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.

The meeting focused on an interesting aspect that would have a wider effect. The US government is now expected to use the term ‘super intelligence’ instead of ‘artificial intelligence’ in official language. The change comes as Trump pushes for faster AI growth in the US. The new term sounds bigger and more positive, but changing the name does not change the risks linked to the technology.

The most interesting part here isn’t the voluntary pact; it may be the change in words. Artificial intelligence is now a common term and most importantly it is now linked to fears about lost jobs, fake content and safety problems. Alternatively, Super intelligence gives the technology a different feel. It sounds more powerful, but it can also sound more exciting.

Can Better Words Build More Trust?

The change in language fits with the US push to stay ahead in AI. It presents advanced AI as an area where the country wants to lead rather than slow things down. Still, public trust will not come from a new name alone. People will judge AI by what it does in the real world. Jobs, safety and the way companies handle risks will matter far more.

The voluntary pact may be useful as a public promise, but its real value will depend on whether companies turn that promise into action.
