Canva unveils Canva Craft, its first image generation model developed by its in-house research team. The launch marks a shift for the design platform, which has so far depended largely on third-party AI models for generative features.

Craft positions Canva alongside Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and Meta in the fast-growing AI image generation market. Unlike many rivals, Canva has built the model for design work rather than photography alone. It targets posters, presentations, social media creatives, infographics, menus and other layout-heavy assets.

A Two-Step Design Process

Craft works in two stages. First, it interprets a user prompt and plans the visual composition. This includes spatial relationships, relative scale, visual hierarchy and text placement. The company said Craft is its first foundation model built and trained from scratch by Canva Research. The move gives Canva greater control over image quality, editing workflows, cost and product direction.

In the second stage, the model renders the image. It can produce visuals at up to 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios, including custom formats. This makes it suitable for platform-specific creatives across social media, web, print and presentations.

Canva further explained that this planning-led approach helps Craft handle design elements more accurately. The focus on structure, hierarchy and editable layouts separates it from general-purpose image generators.

Built for Editable Design

Craft outputs can be converted into layered, editable designs through Canva Magic, the company’s image-to-design transformer. Users can move elements, change text and refine layouts after generation.

Canva Craft is now available to all Canva users through the Dream Lab tab. Users can access it from the bottom-left panel of the Canva interface. Developers can also use Craft through Canva’s public API. Canva expects product teams to integrate it into marketing platforms, e-commerce sites, advertising tools and print services. The launch could broaden Craft’s use in high-volume creative production.
