The return of older Call of Duty: Black Ops games has brought back a wave of memories for fans. Now that Activision is preparing for Modern Warfare 4’s launch, a Reddit post has brought back the launch of the OG Black Ops game port to the surface.
On July 9, 2026, the OG 2009 title was re-released on modern consoles including PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The Redditor captioned, “Say what you will about the ports, but Black Ops has reminded me how good we had it.”

As soon as the post went viral, a wave of comments unanimously agreed to the point that the early Black Ops years were the best time in Call of Duty. A player named Mission-Club-3976, has mentioned, “The games were designed and produced to be good games, rather than to maximise player engagement to optimise the chances of said player to spend extra money on monetisation.”
Many fans have mentioned in the comments that Black Ops, Black Ops 2, and Black Ops 3 had something special. They enjoyed the story, the multiplayer, and the Zombies mode. For them, the older games remain the standard.
For players who haven’t yet tried any of these COD titles, Sony has brought a golden offer for them. PlayStation Plus subscribers currently get a 50% discount on the Black Ops games until August 6, 2026.
The older Black Ops games got many things right. The campaigns told stories that players still remember today. Characters like Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Raul Menendez became fan favorites and helped make each game feel different.
Zombies was another big reason people stayed with the series. Maps like Kino der Toten, Origins, and Mob of the Dead are still loved by many players. Multiplayer also had popular maps such as Nuketown, Raid, and Firing Range. The gunplay felt fair, and unlocking new weapons and Prestige levels gave players a reason to keep coming back.

Looking back at the older games also reminds players how glorious that era was. Nostalgia can bring people back, but it cannot keep them playing for long. If not, many players may continue spending their time with the older Black Ops games that made Call of Duty one of the biggest names in gaming.
