Bank of Baroda has confirmed that it recently faced a cyberattack after reports claimed that internal documents had been leaked online. The Triple X ransomware group has claimed that they have extracted 1 TB of data during the breach, with more than 92,000 files identified across 9,783 directories, including customer KYC data, security reports, and internal audit documents.

Following this claim, the bank authority has issued an official post on X saying, “The Bank has robust information security protocols in place. The incident involved the compromise of an employee’s email account, resulting in unauthorised access to certain data.” Bank of Baroda claimed to have identified the breach immediately and took necessary measures to prevent it. The bank has assured that the core banking system wasn’t interrupted during the breach.

A forensic investigation has been initiated to find the criminals behind this breach, and the statement further stated, “The Bank remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of information security and to safeguarding the trust of its customers and stakeholders.”

Reportedly, the data the hackers stole was mainly from internal SharePoint or file-sharing systems. Its core banking platform, Finacle, wasn’t hacked. However, experts are still concerned about the attack as it can pose a severe risk to people.

Why Banks Remain a Major Target for Hackers

Banks handle huge amounts of financial and personal information every day, which makes them an attractive target for cybercriminals. Even if hackers cannot enter the main banking system, they often try to break into employee accounts through fake emails or other online tricks.

Strong security systems, encryption of data, multi-step login, and frequent security checks help banks protect themselves from these attacks. They also train workers to recognize suspicious emails. Despite these measures, cyberattacks continue to grow, forcing banks to continuously improve their security. Banks always advise customers not to share OTPs, PINs, passwords, or banking details with anyone over calls, messages, or emails.

Customers should also regularly check their bank account and enable transaction alerts. If they see anything unusual, they should contact the bank immediately. Simple steps like these can help keep money and personal information safe while the investigation continues.
