Apple could release the iPhone Air 2 in early 2027 with a broader camera system and new in-house chips. The changes target camera choice and battery endurance.
GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu expects five changes. They include a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, an A20 Pro chip, an N2 wireless chip and a C2 modem. Apple has not confirmed the device.
The iPhone Air 2 could pair its 48-megapixel main camera with a new 48-megapixel ultrawide lens. That would add a 0.5x view for wider scenes. The current iPhone Air uses one rear camera and provides 1x and 2x framing from its main sensor.
Pu also expects Apple to keep an 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera. Reports point to a slightly smaller Dynamic Island. However, autofocus, aperture, macro support and video modes remain unknown. Apple may need a thinner Face ID assembly to create more space inside the upper chassis.
The extra rear lens would require an internal redesign. Apple currently places several core parts inside the raised camera plateau. The battery occupies much of the lower body. Adding another sensor could require smaller components or a revised board layout.
Pu expects the iPhone Air 2 to use an A20 Pro processor built with TSMC’s N2 process. TSMC says N2 can deliver 10% to 15% more speed at the same power. It can also cut power use by 25% to 30% at the same speed compared with N3E.
Those gains describe the manufacturing process, not final iPhone battery life. Apple’s chip design, display settings, modem use and software will shape daily endurance. Still, a more efficient processor could reduce power draw during common and extended tasks in daily use.
The phone may also receive Apple’s N2 networking chip and C2 cellular modem. The current iPhone Air uses N1 for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. It uses the C1X modem for sub-6GHz 5G. Apple has not disclosed their supported standards or efficiency targets.
A separate leak claims Apple could raise battery capacity from 3,149mAh to about 3,500mAh. That would represent an increase of roughly 11%. However, Pu did not confirm that figure, and battery chemistry remains unreported. A thinner display could create extra room inside.
Current reports place the iPhone Air 2 launch in spring 2027, possibly around March. Apple may introduce it alongside the standard iPhone 18 and lower-priced iPhone 18e. The company has not confirmed that timetable.
The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a foldable iPhone are expected in late 2026. That schedule would divide Apple’s iPhone releases across two periods. It would also give the Air model more development time after its September 2025 debut.
Pu expects the new model to retain a 6.5-inch display and 12GB of RAM. Price, storage, charging speed, weight and thickness remain unknown. The current iPhone Air measures 5.64mm thick and weighs 165 grams.
Apple faces a packaging challenge with the iPhone Air 2. It must fit a second camera and newer chips while protecting battery space. Final specifications will remain uncertain until Apple presents the device.
