Apple might be building a generative AI-based answer engine, akin to ChatGPT. According to multiple reports, the tech giant has assembled a discreet team of experts building AI tools to enhance Siri and other Apple services.
Inside teams are setting up systems to deliver conversational answers to complex user queries. The tech giant is taking a significant step into the generative AI arena, which OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft currently dominate.
The report also states that Apple has recently been increasing its funding of Artificial Intelligence research and has been making strategic hires of veterans and prodigies in machine learning and natural language processing.
According to media sources, CEO Tim Cook said the “AI revolution is as big or bigger than the internet, smartphones, cloud computing, and apps. Apple must do this. Apple will do this. This is sort of ours to grab. We will make the investment to do it.”
So far, Apple has not been a stranger to AI, though this might signify a more deliberate approach on its part. The older-generation Siri has continuously operated based on very scripted responses and limited language capabilities.
In contrast, the new Apple Answer Engine is shaping up to be a genuine ChatGPT alternative, capable of handling open-ended questions and generating dynamic, conversational responses like Google’s Gemini.
Artificial Intelligence has already worked its wonders in several corners of Apple's ecosystem. Machine learning powers photo search, text prediction, and device personalization. But this recent effort suggests the tech giant wants to go further and create a more intelligent and interactive AI platform.
The engineering team working on the AI engine is said to be cross-departmental and involve Apple Research, software engineering, and cloud infrastructure. The objective is to build a private and secure system with deep integration into Apple devices.
User privacy will be prioritized above all else during the rollout of the Apple AI. Analysts speculate that this answer engine will perform on-device operations wherever possible, keeping data sharing with outside servers to a minimum. It'd be a killer marketing line for Apple amid an increasingly populated Artificial Intelligence market if that plays out.
The answer engine will probably be built into future iOS, macOS, and other Apple platforms. Some have posited that the unveiling could be staggered, commencing in 2025.
