Apple quietly added a selection of well-known Hollywood movies to its Apple TV+ subscription service. It gives subscribers in some markets access to films that were previously available mainly through rental or purchase.
The new titles include ‘Titanic ', ' The Martian’, ‘Arrival’, ‘Gone Girl’ and ‘The Sixth Sense’. The films appear in a new ‘Great Movies Available Now on Apple TV’ section inside the Apple TV app.
The catalogue differs across countries. The US currently has the broadest reported selection. Canada and the UK also have access to the promotion, while a smaller group has been reported in Australia.
The company built Apple TV+ largely around original films and series. The latest move adds a different layer to that strategy through licensed Hollywood content.
The reported US selection covers several genres. It includes science fiction films such as ‘Arrival’, ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’, ‘I’, ‘Robot’, ‘Looper’ and ‘The Martian’. The list also features action titles such as ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.’ Drama, romance and comedy are also represented. ‘A Beautiful Mind’, ‘The Proposal’, ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ and ‘Zoolander’ are among the other titles included.
The company, however, has not announced the licensing agreements or said how long the films will stay on the service. The tech giant did not also confirm that it plans to build a permanent large-scale library of third-party movies.
The addition gives Apple a way to offer more viewing choices without relying entirely on new original productions. Recognisable films can also add value to the subscription during periods between major original releases. There is a precedent for this approach.
Apple added 51 licensed movies under a similar promotion in March 2024. Another group of about 30 films followed in April that year. The current move appears to follow that temporary licensing model. Its long-term status is still unclear.
Apple offers its Apple TV subscription in India at Rs. 99 per month after a seven-day free trial. The newly added Hollywood films, however, have not been confirmed as part of the Indian subscription catalogue. This distinction matters for Indian viewers. A movie listed in the Apple TV app may still require a separate rental or purchase in India.
For now, Apple appears to be using licensed movies as a supplement to its Originals-focused service. Whether that becomes a regular part of Apple TV+ will depend on future licensing deals and the company's wider streaming strategy.
