Apple aims to simplify its MacBook Pro range by keeping touchscreens on most premium models. According to Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, the company will retain only the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro without touch support.
The report says, “Apple will phase out non-touch versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These models are expected to disappear when Apple launches its second-generation touchscreen MacBook Pros in 2027.”
Apple recently introduced its first touchscreen MacBook Pros. The new machines carry 14.2-inch and 16.3-inch PROLED XDR OLED displays and ship with M5 Pro or M5 Max processors.
Touch input is now standard on these premium laptops. This marks a major shift for Apple, which resisted touchscreens on Macs for years while pushing the feature across iPhones and iPads. The tech giant now appears ready to make touch a defining feature of its higher-end MacBook Pro range. Buyers seeking more processing power will likely need to choose a touchscreen model.
This approach creates a clearer divide in the line-up. Casual and mainstream professional users can choose the 14-inch base model, while creators and power users move to touchscreen Pro and Max configurations.
The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro will remain the exception. Apple is expected to update it with an M7 chip and introduce a thinner, lighter design in 2027.
The change could affect purchasing decisions in the near term. Customers who want a 16-inch MacBook Pro without touch may have limited time to buy one. Apple did not officially confirm the plan.
