Apple is rolling out a new system in its retail stores to deal with iPhone return fraud. The tool can scan a sealed iPhone box and check the device inside without opening the packaging.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said, “Apple started sending the devices to stores earlier this month. Staff can now verify whether a returned iPhone is present, intact and working before accepting it back into stock. “

Decoding the Scanner

Employees scan the sealed box, and the system runs diagnostics on the iPhone inside. It checks for missing devices, removed parts or other signs of tampering. The technology reportedly uses the same approach as Apple’s ‘Presto’ system, which already updates iPhones while they remain sealed in their retail boxes. Apple has now adapted it for return checks.

If the scan clears the device, the sealed box can go directly back to inventory. Staff do not have to open every returned package or send potentially sellable stock for further inspection.out the phone, accessories or internal components. Some people hope store staff will accept the box without checking what is inside.

Why Apple Needs It

The tech giant faced a growing problem with customers returning iPhone boxes after taking. Earlier, employees usually had to open returned iPhone boxes to confirm the contents. That process helped catch fraud, but it also meant genuine sealed products could be pulled from shelves and treated as unusable inventory.

The scanner gives staff a quicker way to separate honest returns from suspicious ones. It also helps Apple protect stock and cut losses from fraudulent claims. The system currently applies to iPhones. Apple did not make an official announcement. Experts suggest that iis unclear how many stores have received the device.
