AMD has teamed up with AI startup Anthropic for its next major AI chip customer. The deal also includes an investment commitment of up to $5 billion, marking one of the company's biggest partnerships in the artificial intelligence market.
The agreement is expected to be worth tens of billions of dollars in AI chips and infrastructure. As part of the deal, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's next-generation Instinct MI450 GPUs, with deliveries set to begin in the first half of 2027. The chips will power Anthropic's own data centres as well as third-party cloud, or "neocloud," infrastructure. The two companies will also work together to identify locations for future data centre deployments.
AMD's investment in Anthropic will be tied to deployment milestones under the agreement. The partnership also includes an engineering collaboration, with AMD planning to use Anthropic's Claude AI models to improve the performance of its chips and AI software.
Anthropic already uses AI hardware from NVIDIA, Google and Amazon. Adding AMD's accelerators expands its computing options as demand for AI infrastructure continues to rise.
For AMD, the deal adds another high-profile AI customer as it competes more aggressively with NVIDIA. It also reflects the growing importance of long-term computing capacity, with leading AI companies seeking multiple hardware suppliers to support the development and deployment of advanced AI models.
