Anthropic is considering launching a new artificial intelligence model as it responds to growing competition from OpenAI. The potential release could come ahead of Anthropic’s expected initial public offering (IPO).
The company is assessing whether to bring a new model to market as OpenAI’s recently released GPT-6 Astra gains traction among business users. The development puts additional pressure on Anthropic as it seeks to maintain its position in the enterprise AI market.
Reuters reported, “The timing of any release remains under discussion. Anthropic has not publicly confirmed the model, its capabilities, or a launch schedule. The possible move also comes at a notable time for the AI company.”
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for the industry to slow the pace of AI capability development because of concerns about increasingly powerful systems. On September 12, Amodei published a 3,800-word essay. He advised AI companies to reduce the speed of upgrading AI models. He highlighted concerns about the potential risks posed by increasingly capable AI systems and autonomous agents.
The potential model release comes against a backdrop of competing priorities. Anthropic must balance its emphasis on AI safety with the commercial pressure created by rapid developments from rivals.
Experts suggest that OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, released earlier this month, gained momentum among businesses. Some investors have consequently begun reassessing Anthropic’s position in enterprise AI.
Looking ahead, Anthropic continues to gain significant commercial momentum. Reuters reported that its projected 2026 annualised revenue run rate exceeds USD 65 billion, compared with about USD 40 billion for OpenAI. However, open-source AI models are also emerging as competitors, offering businesses lower-cost and more flexible alternatives.
