Amazon has given its Kindle e-reader lineup one of its biggest hardware redesigns in years, removing the raised bezel around the display to make the devices thinner, lighter, and easier to carry. The new Kindle family, unveiled on October 1, 2026, includes refreshed Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft models, along with new versions for children. The redesigned devices are launching across markets including the US, Canada, the UK, Japan, Australia, and several European and Middle Eastern countries.

The most noticeable change is the move to a flush-front display, which removes the step between the screen and the surrounding frame. While the traditional bezel gave readers somewhere to rest their fingers, Amazon said it has developed a touch system that recognizes where a user's thumb is positioned and creates a temporary area that ignores accidental touches.

New Kindle Gets Thinner and Lighter

The standard six-inch Kindle is now just 6.8mm thick and weighs 140 grams, making it both slimmer and lighter than the previous generation. Amazon also claimed faster performance, with page turns about 30% quicker than before.

The entry-level model starts at $149.99 and comes in Ube and Graphite. Amazon is also introducing an aluminum-backed version for the first time, with 32GB of storage and additional color choices including Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green.

Paperwhite and Colorsoft Also Get a Makeover

The redesign extends beyond the basic Kindle. The Kindle Paperwhite is also thinner and lighter, while retaining features such as its large display and high-contrast screen. The standard model includes 16GB of storage and starts at $199.99, while the 32GB Signature Edition costs $249.99.

Amazon's Kindle Colorsoft, which debuted in 2024 as the company's first color Kindle, also gets the flush-front treatment. The 16GB model starts at $289.99, while the 32GB Signature Edition costs $319.99. Both models are available in new color options.

New Kindles Roll Out Across Global Markets

Amazon has started selling the new Kindle and its aluminium version in a range of countries, while the updated Paperwhite and Colorsoft are available for preorder. The company is also continuing its Kids lineup, including a color version of the Kindle Colorsoft for younger readers.

Alongside the redesigned readers, Amazon is introducing accessories including Kindle Click, a Bluetooth remote that lets users turn pages without touching the e-reader. The company is also offering a new cover with physical page-turn buttons for selected premium models.
