Amazon has announced an additional $21 billion (about €18 billion) investment in Spain to scale up its data-centre footprint. This move will also strengthen the artificial intelligence infrastructure, in one of the largest cloud commitments in Europe.

Spain Emerges as Key AWS Hub

The new investment will mainly enhance Amazon Web Services (AWS) operations through facility expansions. It involves creating multiple new facilities in the Aragón region, which will strengthen Spain's role as a major digital access point for southern European markets. The move takes Amazon’s total planned investment in the country to nearly €33.7 billion.

The company stated that its new infrastructure will meet the rising demand for cloud computing, the requirements of increasing workload by generative AI, and the ever-increasing needs of high-performance data processing across the entire region.

Jobs, Supply Chains, and Long-Term Impact

Amazon expects the expanded program to create around 30,000 jobs by 2035, including construction, engineering, telecommunications, and supply chain jobs throughout the local area. Spanish authorities have framed the investment as a major boost for economic output and regional development, particularly in Aragón, which is fast becoming one of Europe’s largest data-centre clusters.

Part of Global AI Spending Race

The announcement comes as Big Tech firms accelerate capital expenditure on AI infrastructure to keep pace with the surging demand for computing power. Hyperscalers such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are investing billions in new data centres, specialized chips, and energy capacity to run next-generation AI models.

The land resources, renewable energy sources, and European and transatlantic network connections that Amazon needs for its AI operations expansion in Spain will support its business activities.

Europe’s Digital Sovereignty Push

The investment supports Europe’s initiative to establish domestic cloud and AI capabilities, which will help fulfill regulatory requirements and data protection needs and enable strategic autonomy.

Spain will use this expansion to establish itself both as a regional cloud hub and a major player in Europe’s AI infrastructure development competition.
