Amazon has announced the discontinuation of its Android Appstore, with plans to close it on August 20, 2025. The company informed developers that they would no longer be able to submit new applications to the store as part of the shutdown. Along with this closure, Amazon will also end its Amazon Coins program, which allowed users to purchase apps and games using virtual currency.
The company stated in a support page update that, effective August 20, 2025, the Amazon Appstore will no longer be accessible on Android devices. Amazon decided on this transaction to enhance its app store products on proprietary hardware platforms. According to the company, their main objective will be to address users' requirements who use Amazon devices such as Fire Tablet and Fire TV to access the Appstore. As part of the change, Amazon will also discontinue its Amazon Coins program, and users with remaining coins in their accounts will receive refunds.
Amazon plans to continue running its app store on devices that it directly operates, even though it closed it for Android usage. Amazon Fire tablets and Fire TV users can continue accessing the app store for downloads and purchases. The company has made a strategic decision to stop supporting the Android version of the store while concentrating its efforts on users of Amazon devices.
The Amazon App Store has faced security vulnerabilities in recent years. McAfee Labs reported last year that a store application posed as a health tool and spread harmful malware through it. The discovery of this vulnerability created worries about the security platform, particularly among users who use Amazon products.
Research from Techcrunch indicated that the Appstore had minimal customer adoption using hardware outside the Amazon devices. The decreasing usage patterns of the Appstore probably led to Amazon's decision to merge various services and end support for Android app store operations. The decision follows Amazon’s earlier plan to deactivate the Windows Appstore in 2021, with March 2025 as the final cutoff date.
The upcoming Amazon strategy concentrates on its main customer demographic while optimizing services exclusively for its proprietary hardware devices. The company intends to support app store functionality for products with its highest user base especially Amazon Fire tablets and Fire TV devices.
