Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates calls for mandatory safeguards and government oversight of artificial intelligence. He argues that a simple AI ‘kill switch’would not be enough to address the risks posed by the new age tech. In an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press that aired on Sunday, Gates said, “AI companies should not be allowed to rely on self-regulation.”
Gates said governments need to establish rules that require advanced AI systems to include safeguards and monitoring capabilities. He argued that these measures should be mandatory rather than voluntary.
“You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like,” Gates said in the interview. He added that such requirements would create additional costs for the industry but would not dramatically slow AI development.
Gates also said, “Sophisticated AI models should be monitored and generate records showing how they are being used. Such records could give investigators greater visibility when systems are involved in harmful or illegal activity.”
The discussion comes as policymakers debate proposals for an AI kill switch. The concept would allow humans to stop or restrict a powerful AI system if it begins behaving dangerously.
Gates said, “A kill switch has a role but cannot replace monitoring and safeguards built into AI systems.” In a separate NBC interview excerpt, he said, “Advanced models need oversight before a dangerous incident occurs, rather than relying only on an emergency shutdown mechanism.”
Gates’ comments come as governments and technology companies debate how to regulate increasingly autonomous AI systems. His warning reflects wider concerns about the potential misuse of advanced AI for cyberattacks, fraud and other harmful activities.
