A 10-year-old Taiwanese inventor won two top awards for an AI electronic nose that could help airport security detect drugs, banned food products, and dangerous substances without opening luggage.

Ten-year-old Taiwanese inventor Hsu Ting-wei won a top Silicon Valley invention award for an AI electronic nose. The award came at the 2026 Silicon Valley International Festival in California. Hsu received a gold medal and the International Federation of Inventors' Associations Best Invention Award. 

His Novel Artificial Electronic Nose combines air sampling, chemical analysis, and AI recognition. The system could add chemical detection to airport baggage checks without opening luggage. 

Hsu, a student at Kang Chiao International School, designed the platform for use behind X-ray baggage scanners. The system samples air escaping from luggage and studies its chemical signatures. 

Gas chromatography mass spectrometry then works with AI based odor recognition technology. The approach could help identify drugs, prohibited food products, and other dangerous substances. 

Hsu said the invention could help stop pork products linked to African swine fever. He also highlighted its possible use against fentanyl trafficking at US borders.

Jury chairman Amin Ghafooripour said the award recognized more than Hsu's young age. He said judges saw practical value in the invention and remembered its strong impact.

The invention could give airport security another detection layer alongside X-ray screening. X-ray systems reveal objects, while chemical sensing could provide additional clues about suspicious contents.

Hsu's achievement also came during a record festival run for Taiwanese inventors. Taiwan secured 24 gold medals, eight silver medals, and one bronze across 35 entries. The results marked Taiwan's highest gold medal count since joining SVIIF in 2018.

The electronic nose remains an award winning invention rather than a confirmed airport deployment. Further testing would need to assess accuracy, false alarms, airflow conditions, and high volume screening.
