Last week, Nintendo officially revealed the Nintendo Switch 2. The Nintendo Switch has dominated the handheld console market, with millions of active users playing games on it every day. Since it has been almost eight years since the original Nintendo Switch was released, speculation about a next-generation console being launched this year is quite reasonable. With that in mind, the first official look at the Nintendo Switch 2 has now been unveiled.

When is Nintendo Switch 2 Coming?

Since its announcement, the Nintendo Switch 2 has been at the center of the attraction of Nintendo Switch players. While speculations about this next-gen console coming in 2025 have already been in the air, Nintendo sealed the deal with an official announcement.

The successor of Nintendo Switch will release this year. That’s the only information revealed in the latest trailer. On April 25, 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct will be held to introduce this new console to the gaming world, though the time of the event hasn’t yet been revealed. After that, players will get the console.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct will feature a detailed look at the console, providing gamers with information on its hardware and software. This event will be broadcast on official Nintendo channels on Twitch and YouTube for gamers to watch it live.

Nintendo Switch 2 Opening New Avenues for Portable Gaming

Now that it took Nintendo more than seven years to bring this next-gen console, hopefully, it will be something spectacular. At this point, not many features have been officially revealed, but from the appearance, some changes are completely visible, and among them, one significant change that’s been observed is its size.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is going to be bigger in size than its predecessor. It looks like the upcoming Switch console is going to have an around 8-inch screen, which is 30% bigger than its predecessor’s 6.2-inch LCD screen. Aside from that, other features that the console is going to have are listed below:

Backward Compatibility: No matter which console someone is playing games on, backward compatibility is one of the most significant features to have. Backward compatibility prevents gamers from losing their library when switching to a better version of consoles. Nintendo Switch didn’t have it, but with the Switch 2, Nintendo is stepping into this to let players not lose their massive library while switching to Switch 2.

  • Improved Dock: A dock is what makes consoles better. While the Nintendo Switch is definitely the best portable console for playing games anytime and anywhere, Switch consoles need to have a good dock to be a good home console as well. Switch 2 is going to have a dock to connect to the TV. The shape and the size look similar; only the corners have been rounded off to match the Joy-Cons.

  • Joy-Cons Getting a Trigger Button: Joy-Cons have also gone through some changes. The front side of each Joy-Con features a new trigger button that detaches the Joy-Cons from the main controller. However, the classic control layout will be the same for Switch 2.

  • A Mystery Button Added: As the trailer reveals, the Joy-Cons have gone through some significant additions, and among them, the first is the addition of a new button below the Home button. This is an unlabelled button, and Nintendo didn’t specify what it will do.

  • Joy-Con Getting LED Light: Once again, the green LED lights indicate which Joy-Con is assigned to which players are returning to the Switch 2. However, the only change is that this time, the lights are placed in the forward-facing stripe.

The remaining parts of the console are the same. The top side of the console still has the power button, volume buttons, and a headphone jack. The Game Card slot is also on the top edge of the console as it used to be on the previous devices.

There’s only one addition here, and that’s a USB-C port. The use of it is unknown at this point. The Switch 2 is also replacing the rear-facing speakers with brand-new downward-firing speakers.

Games Coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Well-designed consoles matter, but what matters most is the games available on them. Therefore, irrespective of the changes made to Switch 2’s design and size, gamers are curious about the games coming to Nintendo Switch 2.

During the announcement trailer last week, players only received showcases of Mario Kart. Anyway, that’s certainly not going to be the only game coming on this next-gen console. There are a total of eight games coming to this console, as per the reports:

  • Mario Kart: It seems a new mainline Mario Kart game is under development and will be the first game to be released on Switch 2.

  • Littlelands: Littlelands is an upcoming action-adventure game without any release date mentioned. It will also come on Nintendo Switch 2.

  • Aurascope: This will be an action-adventure platformer with light puzzles and some role-playing elements combined. This game still has no release date.

  • Secret Forest: Secret Forest is an open-world MMORPG by Zelcar Games without any concrete release date. An open beta of this game will come in some time, but that won’t be available on Switch 2.

  • My Time at Evershine: Another game without any release date that’s confirmed to come on Nintendo Switch 2. This is in the making by Pathea Games as a sandbox-simulating experience with RPG elements included in it.

  • Bestiario: Bestiario is coming to Nintendo’s next-gen console, but currently, it has no specific release date. It is going to be a turn-based RPG with some social sim elements.

  • Yooka-Replaylee: It is undoubtedly a remake version of the 2017-released 3D platformer, Yooka-Laylee. Playtonic Games is making this remake, but currently, there’s no release date announced for this game.

  • Synth Beasts: It is going to be an action RPG by Radhood Advance, where players can capture and tame different beasts. Again, a game with no release date.

The upcoming console will be backward compatible, which means players will get all the renowned titles on it from their Nintendo Switch library. Additionally, as the next-gen console is finally coming, Pokémon and The Legend of Zelda series games will also be released on it.
