Apple is getting ready to drop its next-gen MacBook Air models with the M4 chip, and they could be here as soon as March. While the design stays the same, the real upgrades are under the hood. This update is expected to complete Apple’s transition to M4 chips across most of its Mac lineup, leaving only the Mac Studio and Mac Pro waiting for their turn.

What’s New in the M4 MacBook Air?

The M4 MacBook Air will come in two sizes: 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch. It will have the same slim, flat design as the 2022 model. Instead of changing the look, Apple is focusing on better performance.

  • M4 Chip Power: The M4 chip will have a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, like the base MacBook Pro M4. This will make it faster, more efficient, and smoother for daily tasks, gaming, and creative work.

  • More RAM: Apple has removed the 8GB RAM models from the M2 and M3 MacBook Air. So, the M4 MacBook Air will likely start with 16GB RAM, making multitasking and heavy tasks easier.

  • Longer Battery Life: The 15-inch model may last over 18 hours on a single charge, while the 13-inch version may last around 15 hours.

  • Support for Two Displays: Older MacBook Air models allowed two external monitors only if the laptop was closed. The M4 version will support two external screens, even when the laptop is open.

  • Enhanced Camera: The M4 MacBook Air is rumored to include a 12-megapixel Center Stage front-facing camera, similar to the one found in the M4 MacBook Pro.

How Much Will It Cost?

Apple is expected to keep pricing the same:

  • 13-inch MacBook Air M4: Starts at $1,099

  • 15-inch MacBook Air M4: Starts at $1,299

Should You Wait for It?

If you’re using an older MacBook Air, this upgrade is worth considering, especially with the extra RAM, better battery life, and improved external display support. The only downside? The base model might still come with just 256GB of storage, so if you need more space, you’ll have to pay extra for an upgrade.

Overall, the M4 MacBook Air looks like a solid refresh rather than a complete redesign. If you’ve been waiting for a big design overhaul, you might be disappointed, but if you want better performance without a price hike, this might be the perfect time to upgrade.
