‘Widow’s Bay’ dominated the 2026 Emmys, breaking the record for most awards won by a comedy series in one season.
Matthew Rhys, Jean Smart, Rhea Seehorn and Sally Field achieved significant milestones during the ceremony with notable victories.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards brought together television's biggest names for a night filled with major victories, emotional tributes and several historic milestones. Held in Los Angeles on September 14, the ceremony saw ‘Widow’s Bay’ emerge as the biggest winner, while ‘The Pitt’ continued its strong run in the drama categories.
The night also delivered notable firsts for actors including Matthew Rhys, Jean Smart, Rhea Seehorn and Sally Field, making the 2026 Emmys one of the most memorable ceremonies in recent years.
Apple TV's ‘Widow’s Bay’ emerged as the biggest winner of the night. The comedy-horror film won 14 Emmys overall, with six of those won during the live telecast and eight from the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony that was held ahead of time.
This made it the show to win the most Emmy awards among comedies in one season, breaking the record previously set by The Studio, which had won 13.
Winners included the Outstanding Comedy Series award, Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root, and Kate O’Flynn, who won acting categories. Katie Dippold won the writer’s category, while Hiro Murai won Outstanding Directing.
‘The Pitt’ went on to make another successful run at the Emmys, taking home the Outstanding Drama Series title for the second straight time. Noah Wyle also defended his title from last year as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
As per the Television Academy, the network’s drama series was the first series to repeat the Outstanding Drama Series honor in each of its first two seasons, since Mad Men. Wyle is only the second actor to do so in the category after Bryan Cranston.
Matthew Rhys had an absolutely stunning evening at the ceremony. He received two awards in lead acting categories, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for ‘Widow’s Bay’ and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for ‘The Beast in Me.’
This victory marked Matthew's unusual record in Emmys. In addition to winning his earlier drama award for The Americans, he became the first actor to win lead acting Emmys in all three main categories.
Jean Smart clinched her fifth Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in recognition of her performance in ‘Hacks.’
This is her third successive Emmy win in the same category and makes her the first artist to have won an Emmy for all seasons of a TV series. This win also takes her tally of acting Emmys to eight, and she is tied with three other actors in that achievement.
Rhea Seehorn secured her first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Apple TV's ‘Pluribus.’ The victory marked another notable milestone at this year's ceremony, while creator Vince Gilligan also received his first individual writing Emmy for the series.
Sally Field won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her part in ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures.’ The actress, who turned 79 years old, is the oldest person to win the award in the category's history, reported the Television Academy.
The evening included several other records and firsts, and the achievement of Sally Field was one of them.

Another notable moment in the evening was Michael J. Fox receiving the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his humanitarian activities in favour of researching Parkinson's disease.
It is to be mentioned that the award honoured the work of Michael J. Fox over the years and through the Michael J. Fox Foundation which raises funds for the research of Parkinson's disease.
For the first time in 15 years, the show was hosted by a woman, Mariska Hargitay, best-known as Olivia Benson in ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.’ Hargitay, in her turn, brought some musical performances to the ceremony, some jokes, and more than a costume change.
DTF St. Louis won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, adding another major win to a ceremony that featured strong competition among established hits and newer productions.
Meanwhile, ‘The Traitors’ won Outstanding Reality Competition Program for the third consecutive year, while ‘The Late Show’ with Stephen Colbert took home Outstanding Variety Series for the second consecutive year.
From ‘Widow's Bay’ breaking the comedy Emmy record to Rhys bagging two awards for lead acting roles on the same night, there were many milestone moments at the 2026 Emmy Awards.
