A certificate shows that a course was finished. A project shows that messy data can travel from raw files to a tested result. The ten data science projects for beginners below run from classic models to a retrieval chatbot. Nine are machine learning projects for beginners. The tenth covers generative AI. All ten are Python data science projects.

Movie Recommendation System

This build predicts how a user would rate unseen films. MovieLens 100K from GroupLens supplies 100,000 ratings from about 1,000 users on about 1,700 movies. The Surprise library offers KNN-based collaborative filtering and SVD matrix factorization. RMSE and MAE on held-out ratings measure accuracy. Surprise handles explicit ratings only, not clicks.

Sentiment Analysis

This task labels opinions as positive or negative. The IMDb Large Movie Review dataset on Hugging Face supplies 25,000 training and 25,000 test reviews. A Hugging Face transformer is compared with a Scikit-learn baseline. HTML line breaks and duplicate reviews are removed first. Accuracy and F1 on the test set measure results. Movie-review models may transfer poorly to tweets.

Sales Forecasting With Time Series Data

Daily records are aggregated into weekly forecasts. Kaggle's Store Item Demand Forecasting Challenge offers five years of daily sales for 50 items across 10 stores. Statsmodels ARIMA and Prophet produce the forecasts.

The final weeks serve as a test set. MAE and RMSE compare both models with a naive baseline. This set lacks holiday effects and store closures. Real retail data is messier.

Handwritten Digit Classification

This project trains a model to read handwritten digits. MNIST ships with Keras. A logistic regression baseline comes first to show what a Keras or PyTorch network adds. Test accuracy and a confusion matrix show which digits get confused. High scores on clean MNIST say little about messier images.

Customer Segmentation

This project groups customers by how they buy. UCI Online Retail holds 541,909 UK gift retailer transactions from December 2010 to December 2011. K-means in Scikit-learn clusters customers by recency, frequency, and spend. The elbow method and silhouette score set the cluster count. Wholesalers and cancelled invoices, marked by a leading C, need cleaning first.

Credit Card Fraud Detection

This project flags fraud in the ULB Credit Card Fraud dataset on Kaggle. It holds 284,807 European card transactions from two days in September 2013. Only 492 are fraud. XGBoost with class weights or resampling handles the imbalance. Preprocessing, feature selection, and resampling use training data only, after a stratified split.

Precision, recall, and the precision-recall curve measure results. The chosen threshold needs a stated reason. Accuracy misleads here. Predicting genuine every time scores about 99.8%. Anonymized PCA features hide what triggers a flag.

Heart Disease Prediction

This project estimates heart disease from clinical measurements. UCI Heart Disease holds 303 patients and 13 features, with some values missing. The 0 to 4 target collapses into presence or absence. Logistic regression with scaled features serves as the model. ROC-AUC and recall, checked by cross-validation, suit the small sample. This is an educational exercise and must not guide medical decisions.

Housing Price Prediction

This project predicts median house values. The California Housing dataset, built into Scikit-learn, has 20,640 samples and 8 features. Linear regression comes first, then gradient boosting. Cross-validation on the training set reports RMSE. A separate test set gives the final score. The target spans only 0.15 to 5.0, in units of $100,000. Luxury homes are barely covered.

Employee Attrition Prediction

This project predicts which employees are likely to leave. The IBM HR Analytics Employee Attrition & Performance dataset has 1,470 rows and 35 columns. About 16 % of rows are marked as attrition. Recall, F1, and feature importance compare a Scikit-learn decision tree with a random forest. IBM data scientists created the data, so the findings are practice, not workplace evidence.

RAG Chatbot Over Custom Documents

Retrieval-augmented generation teaches retrieval, embeddings, and LLM integration in one build. That makes it one of the most useful generative AI beginner projects. Notes should track every change.

  1. Twenty to 50 usable documents are collected.

  2. The documents are split into chunks.

  3. A Sentence Transformers model creates the embeddings.

  4. FAISS or ChromaDB stores the vectors.

  5. The closest chunks go to an LLM through LangChain or LlamaIndex.

  6. Twenty test questions check each answer against the retrieved text.

  7. Gradio or Streamlit wraps the chatbot. Hugging Face Spaces can host it. Its documentation lists current options and pricing.

Every wrong answer should be logged and traced to the retrieval step.

Tools Worth Knowing

Google Colab and Kaggle Notebooks need no local setup, which keeps beginner data science projects in 2026 easy to start. GitHub holds code and README files in one public place. Tableau Public suits standalone visuals that need more polish than Matplotlib offers.

Building a Portfolio

Hands-on data science learning rewards finished work. Two or three projects are enough, ideally one classic and one in generative AI. Each deserves a README covering the data source, method, and evaluation result. Documented projects say more than a folder of half-finished work. A note on what failed and what to try next shows how that person thinks.

Final Thought

Tools will keep changing, but the habit of testing every result against evidence will outlast them. Learners who build that habit early gain a lasting edge. They question outputs, catch weak assumptions, and judge models on proof. That discipline lets them adapt to methods that do not exist yet.
