Artificial intelligence (AI) agents are evolving from systems that answer questions into software capable of independently completing tasks. Payments are becoming an important part of that transition, potentially creating opportunities for blockchain networks, stablecoins and digital assets such as XRP.
For Ripple and the XRP Ledger (XRPL), the question is whether autonomous software could eventually become blockchain users themselves.
An autonomous agent might purchase data, computing power, API access or digital services without requiring a person to manually approve every transaction.
Traditional payment systems were primarily designed around humans and businesses. That is changing. Mastercard launched Agent Connect in September 2026, providing infrastructure that connects merchants, AI agents, digital platforms and payment providers while maintaining user authorization and merchant controls.
Mastercard also partnered with Alchemy to integrate AgentCard with Mastercard Agent Pay, allowing developers to build agents capable of making authorized online purchases with spending controls and payment protections.
Ripple moved directly into this emerging market. In June, it launched the XRPL AI Starter Kit, enabling developers to build agents capable of creating wallets, checking balances and making payments.
The initial release added x402 support, allowing agents to purchase API calls, AI inference and other services using XRP or RLUSD. XRPL transactions typically settle within 3-5 seconds, while predictable transaction costs can help agents manage automated spending.
Ripple expanded those capabilities in September with XRPL AI Starter Kit 1.1. The update supports Stripe and Tempo's Machine Payments Protocol and the Open Wallet Standard, giving agents another standardized method for purchasing online services and interacting with wallets.
Machine commerce could involve frequent small payments. An agent might pay individually for hundreds of data requests rather than purchasing a monthly subscription.
XRPL payment channels could support repeated XRP payments during these sessions. However, session-based stablecoin payments currently depend on a proposed ledger upgrade.
RLUSD could become important as agents purchasing services may prefer predictable dollar-denominated values. Ripple reported USD 2.39 billion of RLUSD in circulation, backed by approximately USD 2.51 billion in reserve funds as of September 21.
Not automatically. AI agents can use RLUSD and other XRPL-issued assets, meaning greater network activity does not translate directly into equivalent XRP investment demand.
Moreover, Ripple's MPP integration remains in beta, with no disclosed commercial customers or payment volumes yet.
Why This Matters
Agentic commerce could create millions of automated transactions for data, software and computing services. XRPL's fast settlement, XRP payment channels and RLUSD support give Ripple the infrastructure to compete as payment standards for autonomous software begin taking shape.
Agentic AI could create a new class of blockchain users: autonomous software. Ripple is positioning XRP and RLUSD within emerging machine-payment standards, but adoption remains early. Whether this materially affects XRP will depend on developer usage, transaction volumes and asset preferences.
Also Read: XRP Ledger Explained: How XRP Transactions Work Without Mining
1. How could AI agents use the XRP Ledger?
AI agents could use XRPL to create wallets, check balances and automatically pay for APIs, computing resources or digital services. XRPL’s rapid settlement could support frequent machine-to-machine transactions.
2. What is the XRPL AI Starter Kit?
Ripple’s XRPL AI Starter Kit provides developers with tools for connecting autonomous AI agents to XRP Ledger payments. Its latest capabilities include support for x402, Machine Payments Protocol and Open Wallet Standard.
3. What role could XRP play in agentic payments?
XRP can serve as a native settlement asset for automated payments and payment channels on XRPL. However, agents could also transact using RLUSD or other issued assets rather than XRP.
4. Why could RLUSD be useful for AI agents?
RLUSD provides dollar-denominated value on blockchain infrastructure, potentially giving agents more predictable purchasing power. This could be useful when automatically paying for APIs, data, software or computing resources.
5. Will growth in agentic AI automatically increase XRP demand?
Not necessarily. Increased XRPL activity could involve XRP, RLUSD or other assets, so network adoption does not directly translate into equivalent XRP investment demand. Actual impact will depend on adoption, transaction volumes and payment preferences.
