India's cryptocurrency market is expanding beyond Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, with smaller cities becoming major sources of new users and trading activity. Recent exchange reports suggest that regional participation, younger investors, and mobile access are reshaping digital asset adoption, although taxation and market risks remain obstacles.
ZebPay's September 2026 report mentioned that more than 120,000 new users joined the exchange during the first half of 2026, with tier 2 and tier 3 cities contributing 62% of registrations. Additionally, around 63% of users held cryptocurrencies without trading, indicating a growing preference for long-term investment strategies. Users aged 18-24 account for nearly half of registrations.
This shows ZebPay's customers rather than India's entire cryptocurrency market. However, they highlight how adoption is spreading beyond established metropolitan financial centres. Exchanges increasingly need products designed for first-time investors.
CoinSwitch's 2025 annual report offered similar evidence. Non-metro locations accounted for 75.6% of activity on its platform, including 32.2% from tier 2 cities and 43.4% from tier 3 and tier 4 locations.
CoinSwitch data reported in August 2026 that Uttar Pradesh contributed 12.9% of cryptocurrency investment during the second quarter, ahead of Maharashtra's 12.39% and Karnataka's 8.1%.
Its earlier research identified Lucknow, Jaipur and Patna as emerging centres of participation. The company's 2025 portfolio study also found that Bihar had comparatively high allocations to mid-cap and small-cap crypto assets, demonstrating that investment preferences differ by region.
ZebPay observed another distinction: Tier 3 users recorded a 7% increase in futures trading volume during the first half of 2026, while tier 2 markets experienced sharper declines in spot activity.
Mobile trading platforms, wider internet access and local-language education have made cryptocurrencies more accessible outside major cities. However, easier access does not necessarily mean greater financial security.
CoinDCX's June 2026 report states that the Indian cryptocurrency exchange recorded Rs. 14,664 crore in total trading value during the first half of 2026, compared with Rs. 23,497 crore in the same period of 2025, marking a 37% year-on-year decline.
Meanwhile, WazirX reported a 236% increase in futures trading volume during Q3 2026, highlighting growing interest in cryptocurrency derivatives despite weaker spot market activity. India also ranked first in Chainalysis' 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index, reflecting activity across centralized exchanges and decentralised finance.
India generally taxes qualifying crypto gains at 30% and applies 1% tax deducted at source to specified transactions. These rules can raise trading costs, particularly for frequent investors. Security awareness matters as scams and leverage can expose newcomers to losses.
For exchanges, sustained growth will require transparent risk disclosures, reliable customer support and accessible financial education. Smaller cities may drive the next phase of adoption, but participation alone cannot guarantee profitable or responsible investing when markets remain volatile and consumer protections evolve.
