Consumer spending on generative AI apps surged nearly 200-fold, reflecting growing demand for premium subscriptions.
ChatGPT dominated AI app revenue, while Gemini, DeepSeek and Claude intensified competition for users.
Asia led downloads, but North America captured the largest share of generative AI app spending.
Four years ago, paying for an AI application was uncommon. Consumer spending on generative AI apps has since grown nearly 200-fold between the first quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2026, reaching nearly USD 2 billion, according to Sensor Tower data.
In 2022, the year ChatGPT was launched, in-app purchase revenue from AI chatbots and art generators stood at about USD 30 million. It rose to USD 455 million in 2023 and to nearly USD 1.3 billion in 2024. In 2025, revenue more than tripled, exceeding USD 5 billion.
In the first half of 2026, revenue is on track to surpass USD 4 billion, up 36% from the second half of 2025. Sensor Tower previously projected the category would exceed USD 10 billion in 2026, and the current pace keeps that forecast within reach.

Most of its earnings come from just one app. ChatGPT generated USD 3.4 billion from in-app purchases in 2025, making it the third most profitable app of the year, behind TikTok and Google One. ChatGPT accounted for 63% of total revenue from generative AI apps in the first half of 2025.
It boasts a similarly large user base. In May 2026, ChatGPT became the fastest mobile app to acquire one billion MAUs. ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and DeepSeek collectively accounted for almost 90% of total AI assistant app usage in Q1 2026. However, competitors have been catching up in user engagement; Claude's monthly usage rose from 40 minutes to 120 minutes.
Usage and spending have both grown. Total time spent using generative AI applications stood at around 48 billion hours in 2025, three and a half times more than in 2024. Usage time is expected to reach 36 billion hours in the first half of 2026, up from 17.2 billion in 2025.
The growth reflects a shift toward premium, utility-based subscriptions as users subscribe to services that help with work, writing, studying, and shopping, not just for novelty.
This trend applies not only to AI app revenue but has also affected the app industry. App purchases outpaced game purchases in 2025, largely driven by AI apps. Downloads grew by less than 1% in 2025, while revenue rose by more than 10%.

The geographical distribution is clear. Asia dominates downloads, driven by India and Mainland China. Downloads in Asia rose 80% in the first half of 2025 from the preceding six-month period, while Europe grew 51% and North America 39%. India also tops the chart for time spent on applications.
Yet, when it comes to revenue, the picture shifts westward. North America accounted for 40% of revenues from generative AI applications in the first half of 2025 and 39% of the global spending in Q1 2026. Download growth in Asia has not been matched by spending.
Top AI firms are investing heavily to attract users. AI generative advertisements grew more than three times in the United States during Q1 2026, with both OpenAI and Anthropic boosting spending over 800% year on year.
Another important aspect of AI in apps is its popularity. Over 200,000 apps include AI in their descriptions, and those apps are set to reach nearly 10 billion downloads in the first half of 2026.
Numbers are estimates of consumer spending within apps made by Sensor Tower. The data excludes enterprise deals and API fees, which understates AI industry revenue.
