Chrome supports importing bookmarks from supported browsers and from an exported HTML bookmark file.
The process is straightforward on desktop. However, Chrome’s menu names and their placement can change slightly between versions, so there can be minor differences in the steps below.
Bookmarks are saved links to websites that you want to access again later. They can be organized into folders and managed through Chrome’s Bookmark Manager.
Importing bookmarks is useful when you want to transfer bookmarks to Chrome from another browser or restore a collection of saved websites from an earlier backup. Chrome can import bookmarks from supported browsers, while an HTML file provides another way to move them between browsers or computers.
Before importing, check whether your previous browser can export its bookmarks. If Chrome detects the browser and supports direct importing, you can use Chrome’s built-in import option.
Follow These Steps
Open Google Chrome on your computer.
Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
Select Bookmarks and Lists.
Choose Import Bookmarks and Settings.
Select the browser containing the bookmarks you want to transfer.
Follow the prompts and select the bookmark data you want to import.
Complete the process and select Done.
If your previous browser does not appear as an available source, export its bookmarks as an HTML file and use Chrome’s file-import method instead. Google recommends saving bookmarks from many browsers as an HTML file before importing them into Chrome.
An HTML bookmark file is particularly useful if you have already used Export Bookmarks in another browser or created a backup.
Import Bookmarks to Chrome
Open Chrome on your desktop.
Click the three-dot menu.
Go to Bookmarks and lists and select Import bookmarks and settings.
Choose a file.
Locate the exported bookmark HTML file on your computer.
Select the file and click Open.
Select Done after Chrome finishes importing.
This is the main method to import bookmarks from HTML into Chrome.

The Chrome Bookmark Manager lets you view, organize, edit and delete saved bookmarks. To open it, select the three-dot menu, go to Bookmarks and lists, and choose Bookmark Manager. Chrome also provides bookmark-management controls through its bookmark interface.
After importing, open Bookmark Manager and check your folders. If Chrome already contained bookmarks, imported items may appear under Other bookmarks. If there were no existing bookmarks, they can appear in the bookmarks bar.
Open Bookmark Manager and look through the folders for the websites you transferred. Click a few imported links to confirm that they open correctly.
If the bookmarks are not immediately visible, check Other bookmarks and other folders before attempting the import again. The imported bookmarks may not appear exactly where you expect them.
If the import fails, first check that you selected the correct file and that it is a valid bookmark HTML file. An unsupported file or an incorrectly exported file may not work with Chrome.
You can also export the bookmarks again from the original browser and retry the import. If the import appears successful but the bookmarks are missing, check Bookmark Manager and Other bookmarks carefully.
Importing and syncing are different. Importing moves bookmarks from another browser or an HTML file into Chrome. Chrome Sync, when you sign in with a Google Account and save Chrome data to that account, lets you access bookmarks and other saved Chrome information on devices where you use the same account.
To import bookmarks into Chrome, use Import bookmarks and settings for a supported browser or select an exported HTML file. Once the transfer is complete, check Bookmark Manager and your bookmark folders to confirm everything arrived correctly. For future access across devices, Chrome Sync can keep your saved bookmarks available through your Google Account.
