Meta’s WhatsApp is testing a new feature for iPhone users in its latest iOS beta version 25.24.10.72. The app now allows users to share Apple’s Live Photos with full motion and sound.
Before this update, Live Photos shared on WhatsApp turned into static images or GIFs, removing the motion and audio. The new feature keeps the photos alive, letting them play like they do in the iPhone Photos app. Users will see a small Live Photo icon on the thumbnail and can tap a button to view the photo in live mode.
The new update on WhatsApp Beta also enhances the shareability between iPhone and Android. While Live Photos sent from iPhone to Android suffer the unfortunate fate of being rendered as mere motion photos, motion photos from Android find a welcoming reception as Live Photos on the iOS platform. It is a way of ensuring a quite seamless experience for the users across these platforms.
WhatsApp is also activating a toggle besides the sharing options. Users can choose to share a Live Photo with motion or as just a still image. The option appears next to the HD send toggle in the gallery and drawing editor.
Currently, this feature is only allowed to a small group of beta testers via TestFlight. The complete rollout for all users is expected in the coming weeks.
