Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro lineup could introduce camera differences between its Pro and Pro Max models, according to recent leaks. The company has confirmed a September 9 launch event at Apple Park in Cupertino, where it is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 series and possibly its first foldable iPhone.
The event, carrying the tagline ‘surprise and shine’, will also be Apple’s first product launch under John Ternus, who is set to take over from Tim Cook on September 1.
A MacRumors report citing a well-known leaker says the iPhone 18 Pro Max might be the only model to get a variable aperture camera.
With a variable aperture, users can change how much light enters the lens. When it is bright outside, a smaller opening can help manage exposure. In darker scenes, a wider opening may help with low light, and it can also make the background blur more noticeable.
Apple has not used this technology on an iPhone before. From the iPhone 14 Pro through the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple’s main camera has used a fixed f/1.78 aperture, meaning the lens remains fully open when capturing images.
Leaks also suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max could receive a telephoto system with up to 6x optical zoom. If accurate, the upgrade would give the Pro Max an advantage for photographing distant subjects and travel scenes where additional reach matters.
The bigger implication is that Apple could return to separating its Pro and Pro Max cameras rather than offering identical systems.
The last notable example was the iPhone 15 generation, when the iPhone 15 Pro Max received a tetraprism telephoto lens that the smaller iPhone 15 Pro did not.
If the latest leaks are correct, buyers may face a clearer choice: the iPhone 18 Pro for a smaller flagship experience, or the Pro Max for Apple’s most advanced photography features.
Apple has not confirmed these camera specifications, so final details will depend on what the company reveals at its September event.
