Apple is reportedly expected to introduce a variable-aperture main camera exclusively on the iPhone 18 Pro Max when it launches in September 2026, according to a Weibo post dated Monday, August 17, 2026, from well-known tipster Ice Universe. The standard iPhone 18 Pro, by contrast, is said to retain the fixed f/1.78 aperture used since the iPhone 14 Pro.
The iPhone camera has featured a fixed aperture, where the lens opening remains constant regardless of lighting conditions. To adjust brightness, the iPhone depends on software processing and sensor modifications.
In contrast, a variable aperture physically changes the size of the lens opening, similar to how a human pupil expands or contracts. This would give the camera mechanical control over exposure rather than relying solely on digital enhancements.
For most users, the biggest improvement would likely be visible in outdoor video recording. A variable aperture could narrow the lens in bright light, resulting in smoother footage and better preservation of highlight details.
In still photography, the technology could also enhance Portrait Mode by enabling the lens to naturally produce varying depths of field, reducing the need for software-based background blur simulations.

According to Ice Universe, the variable-aperture mechanism requires more internal volume than the standard iPhone 18 Pro’s smaller chassis can offer. This makes the feature a trade-off tied to the phone’s physical size rather than a simple software or supply decision.
The added hardware could also make the Pro Max heavier. Apple has previously separated its two Pro models through camera hardware. The iPhone 15 Pro shipped without the tetraprism telephoto lens that its larger Pro Max sibling received, a gap Apple later closed after finding room for the component inside the smaller model.
The latest claim does not fully align with earlier reports. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first reported in December 2024 that both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max would receive a variable-aperture main camera. Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station echoed the claim in April 2026.
However, leaked internal documents from Apple supplier Tata Electronics, which surfaced in June 2026, reportedly referenced a Sony IMX905 sensor with variable-aperture support and mentioned only the Pro Max by name.
Both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to launch in September 2026, alongside Apple’s first-ever foldable iPhone.
